About
Marathon Basketball is about being the best you can be both on and off the court. It is our goal that every kid in our program knows the importance of hard work and dedication. We strive on setting goals, and learning how to achieve them. Not everyone is going to be an NBA player, however, if kids can get a college scholarship and/or develop great skillsets such as teamwork, determination, positivity, commitment, problem solving and other strong character traits, then Marathon Basketball has done its job. Coach Josh wants to inspire each player to become the very best version of themselves. Most importantly we want each kid to ENJOY the Journey, not just the destination.
Coaching Experience
Coach Josh showed a love for basketball at a very young age. He’s been playing basketball since around the age of four, once his parents first noticed his extreme passion for the sport. While growing up, Allen Iverson was one of Coach Josh’s favorite basketball players. Although Iverson was a small guard he was known for his aggressiveness, toughness, hard work ethic, and extreme skillset. These were all the qualities that Josh worked extremely hard to possess. Playing basketball while growing up in Prince George’s County, MD was no walk in the park. It is known that Prince George’s County produces top athletes in the NBA, and childhood basketball has always been extremely competitive. This however, did not stop Josh as he was found all over the county playing at local recreational centers, Run-n-Shoot, many outdoor courts, high school open gyms, etc. He instantly fell in love with practicing and trying out new moves and shots during games against other kids. Coach Josh quickly developed a name for himself and became known for his competitiveness, grit, and true love for the game of basketball. He enjoyed testing his strength and advancing his skills every single day. This enjoyment followed him throughout both middle and high school. When Coach Josh entered high school, he knew it was time to take his basketball skills to the next level and through dedication and hard work, that’s just what he did. It was here that he received accolades such as Most Improved, League MVPS, and PG Capital Classic All Star. This was just the momentum he needed to prepare for his collegiate career. Upon graduating from Largo High School, Coach Josh received a scholarship to play Division II basketball at Mount Olive College, in North Carolina. Mount Olive was a great basketball school, and Josh learned various skills and character traits however, his competitiveness grew, and Coach Josh went after his dream of playing Division 1 basketball. Finally ready to turn his dream into a goal, he left his scholarship and transferred to Towson University located in Baltimore, MD, in hopes of becoming a team walk on. Not knowing one single person, Josh arrived on campus and began to start his own brand and following at the Division 1 school. His unmatched work ethic allowed him to instantly stand out from players who were already on the roster. This allowed him the luxury of more practice time on the court (more than players who were already on the team), and the extreme interest of the head basketball coach. It didn’t take long before Josh was awarded a spot on the team. He eventually became one of the top 3-point shooters not only on the team, but in the entire conference. His outstanding collegiate career allowed him the opportunity to play professional basketball overseas in countries such as Romania, Iceland, Kosovo, and Austria. While being overseas, Coach Josh coached kids part-time for periodic camps and games. Coaching children internationally was enjoyable and had turned into his new found passion. Coach Josh knew he wanted to pursue this new found hobby following his successful international career. If you ask Coach Josh what was the most important lesson that he’s learned while playing basketball, he’ll tell you that it’s how to build your weaknesses into strengths. This is an important skill that can be used both on and off the court. Through hard work and dedication any weakness can be turned into a strength and this is an important lesson that Coach Josh wants to pass down to those in his community.
